Chapter Six

I didn’t need to think about it. I knew from the moment he offered me the job that I was going to take it, but I knew I had to at least seem, as though I was being smart about it. The next day after Harry had offered me the job; I called his office and accepted it. That night he had found me again at the bar and when I had finished he offered to take me out to celebrate. I didn’t go out with him, I wanted to, but I didn’t. I had Lisa to get home to and even though my new job was going to be paying me more, I hadn’t started yet and I still needed to pay the babysitter for her time.

Harry had asked me that night why I had to go home. I thought about telling him about Lisa. I thought about telling him about the life that I had run away from, but there was something inside of me that stopped it from happening. I don’t know whether I feared he might take back his offer or that he might judge me for my choices, but I chose not to tell him. I chose to keep Lisa my little secret.

I started working at the hotel a week later. It was a posh, upper class establishment, which was a world away from the dingy little bar where I had been working. The whole place was dripping with expensive ornaments and one of a kind furniture, which made me panic when I first walked in. This wasn’t anything like what I had done before and I suddenly questioned whether or not I was good enough to play for crowds, which might come to places such as these. I mean, they must expect a certain level of quality right?

After my first night however I found that the crowd hadn’t been able to tell that I came from a different world to theirs. In fact, when the tips were split, I found that I had made nearly a week’s salary at the old bar in one night here. I couldn’t help but smile, as I shoved the notes into my bag and zipped it up.

That night Harry asked me if I wanted to go out again and with a purse full of money I wasn’t expecting, I said yes and sent the babysitter a quick text. When I was sure that the babysitter was happy staying with Lisa for the night, I made myself look as presentable, as I could and then joined Harry to go out. Although we had meet on somewhat bad terms, Harry had done a lot more for me than anybody else in my life and even though I didn’t really understand why, I knew that I was grateful and a night out was the least I could do.
